A Simple Lip Balm
Share
Lip balm is the perfect first make — quick, forgiving and endlessly gift-able. Here's my simple, reliable recipe, and once the ratio is in your head, you'll never buy a lip balm again.
You'll need (makes about 5–6 tubes / 50g)
- Beeswax — 20% (10g)
- Cocoa Butter — 25% (12.5g)
- Castor Oil — 10% (5g), for a lovely shine
- Sweet Almond Oil — 44% (22g)
- Vitamin E (Tocopherol) — 1% (a few drops)
- Optional: a food-grade flavour oil, a few drops
Method
- Weigh the beeswax, cocoa butter and oils into a heatproof jug.
- Melt gently over a bain-marie (a bowl over simmering water) until just liquid.
- Take off the heat and stir in the vitamin E (and flavour, if using).
- Pour quickly into tubes or little pots and leave to set for an hour.
A few tips
For a firmer balm, add a touch more beeswax; for a softer one, a little more oil. Because there's no water in this, it needs no preservative — just keep water out and it'll keep for months.
You'll find the butters and oils for this in my Butters and Carrier Oils. Happy making! 🤍
