Bicarbonate of Soda: the fizz behind a good bath bomb

Bicarb (baking soda) is a humble little ingredient that punches well above its weight — and if you're making bath bombs, it's the star of the show.

What it does

In a bath bomb, bicarbonate of soda is the base that reacts with citric acid to create that gorgeous fizz the moment it hits the water. It also softens bath water and leaves skin feeling silky. Beyond bath bombs, it's a gentle ingredient in bath soaks and a mild helper in all sorts of natural recipes.

How to use it

  • The classic bath-bomb ratio is 2 parts bicarb to 1 part citric acid
  • In bath soaks and fizzing bath salts
  • Keep it bone dry until the moment you make — any moisture sets the fizz off early
