Castor Oil: thick, glossy and secretly indispensable

Castor oil is the odd one out in the oil cupboard — thick, sticky and unlike anything else — and once you start formulating you realise you can't do without it.

What makes it different

It's extremely high in ricinoleic acid, which is why it's so viscous and why it behaves like a humectant, drawing a little moisture towards the skin. It also gives the most beautiful high-shine finish, which is exactly what you want in a lip balm or gloss.

What it does

It conditions, it adds slip and cushion to balms, and it makes lips and skin look glossy and healthy. On its own it's too tacky for most people, but as a supporting player it's magic.

How to use it

  • 5 to 20% of a lip balm or gloss for shine and staying power
  • A small amount in body balms for extra glide
  • In brow and lash conditioning blends

A little goes a long way — start low and build up to the feel you like.

Shop Castor Oil — and see it at work in my Simple Lip Balm.
