The Coconut Oils: Virgin, Regular and Fractionated

Coconut is one ingredient that comes in a few different forms, and they behave so differently it's worth knowing which is which. I stock three, and each has its place.

Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

Solid and creamy at room temperature, with that lovely natural coconut scent. It's cold-pressed and unrefined, so it keeps the most of its natural goodness. Rich and protective, gorgeous in body balms, melts, and whipped butters. Shop Extra Virgin Coconut Oil.

Coconut Oil (refined)

Also solid, but refined so it's virtually scent-free — perfect when you want coconut's richness without the smell taking over your fragrance. A workhorse for soaps, balms and butters. Shop Coconut Oil.

Fractionated Coconut Oil (MCT)

This one's a revelation if you've only known solid coconut. It stays liquid, feels light and 'dry', absorbs quickly and has an almost endless shelf life. It's my favourite carrier for roller-ball blends and lightweight massage and face oils. Shop Fractionated Coconut (MCT).

A quick note

Solid coconut oils can be a little too occlusive for some faces (they don't suit everyone's skin), so if you're blemish-prone, the fractionated version or jojoba may be a happier choice on the face. On the body, all three are lovely.
